Journal #5: Thesis Statement

Zora Neal Hurston uses the motif of light versus darkness to expose the underlying theme of discrimination and racism and how they effect the daily lives and thought processes of individuals. Her comparison of the two states, those of light and dark, emphasizes the overall impression of the widespread notion of white supremacy during the time period in which the novel takes place.

  1. Great thesis, I think it's very interesting! But I would end the first sentence after racism. The rest of the sentence seems to be used as a filler, and if it was taken out, I believe it would improve your thesis.

  2. To completely disagree with Tate (haha), I think you should keep that as it clarifies your idea, but I think you should mention how she is critic of the society more than just the actual interactions between the people in it.

  3. I really like the idea using light v. darkness. If you use discrimination, I feel you do not need to include the word racism, just mention it as a sub-part of discrimination.

The second sentence I would revise to lessen the wordiness by saying: "... notion of white supremacy during the novel's time period."

  4. Your thesis is excellent, I noticed this idea but was unable to put it into words so nicely. You've made it abundantly clear and concise.
I agree with Elizabeth about the use of the word "racism".
